In Alberta, Canada, a First Nations female architect, Wanda Dalla Costa, is transforming architectural design by integrating Indigenous culture and traditions. After traveling through 40 countries in 7 years, Costa noticed architecture in many places reflected local culture, which she felt was missing in North America.
Now, Costa works with leaders, community members, universities, and designers to create buildings that reflect Indigenous cultures in Canada and the United States. Her designs connect closely with nature, drawing inspiration from native art rich in symbols and folklore. Costa’s work is laying the foundation for future generations by inspiring other architects and city planners to honor Indigenous heritage in urban spaces.
