Record levels of raw sewage have been discharged into England’s waterways, posing serious health risks to the public and endangering wildlife. Investigations by regulatory bodies into illegal sewage dumping highlight a systemic misuse of storm overflows by water companies. These overflows, intended only for extreme weather conditions, have been exploited to discharge untreated sewage even on dry days, violating environmental laws.
This has sparked outrage among environmentalists and local communities who frequent rivers and beaches for recreation. The exposure to untreated sewage has led to increased sickness among swimmers and poses a grave threat to ecological sites. Only two out of all water companies currently provide real-time data on sewage discharges, calling into question transparency and accountability within the industry.
