Butterfly counting has been found to reduce anxiety and increase one’s connection to nature. A project by butterfly conservation in the UK is monitoring and tracking the population of butterflies by sending volunteers to designated areas and recording the number and species of butterflies they see.
The purpose of this activity is to support and monitor conservation projects. A new study done by Butterfly Conservation found that participants who were counting butterflies felt a range of emotions and showed a strong desire to protect wildlife. This has led to the creation of butterfly havens in gardens and supporting wildlife recovery. The study shows an encouraging shift in people’s attitudes toward actively supporting environmental conservation while improving their overall mental well-being.
