In Thailand, a new approach in aquaculture called integrated multi-trophic aquaculture is transforming single-species fisheries into multi-species ecosystems. By combining fish, seaweed, and shellfish in a single environment, this method creates a balanced ecosystem that boosts productivity and reduces pollution. Traditional fish farms often struggle with high seaweed density, which can hinder growth.
This new method reduces seaweed density, accelerating the growth of all species involved. As a result, local employment has surged, and farmers’ incomes have risen by an impressive 97-percent. The success of this method is encouraging more farmers to adopt this innovative approach to fish farming. By mimicking nature, this shift from traditional single-species fish farming to a multi-species ecosystem is yielding both financial and ecological benefits for the community and the environment.
