GLP-1 weight loss medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound have led millions of people to lose weight by quieting hunger and making it easier to eat less. But there’s a big question behind the hype: what happens when you stop taking them? New research suggests without lasting changes to diet and exercise; many people may quickly start gaining the weight back. A new review from researchers at the University of Oxford looked at 37 studies involving more than 9,300 adults. They found weight regain after stopping GLP-1 medications tends to happen faster than it does after ending lifestyle-based programs like diet and exercise support. On average, people regained weight about 0.7 pounds per month faster once the medications were discontinued, and many were expected to return to their previous weight within about two years.
According to the study, this isn’t a failure of the medicine. Instead, it highlights how obesity often works like a chronic condition, meaning long-term management is usually needed. Weight regains after stopping GLP-1 medications can happen for several reasons. These medications do a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to appetite control by boosting the body’s fullness signals, slowing digestion, and quieting hunger. But once you stop taking them, those effects can fade quickly, and appetite may rebound, making it easier to eat more without realizing it. Also, weight loss itself often triggers the body to conserve energy, meaning your metabolism can slow down because a smaller body naturally burns fewer calories. Hunger hormones may also rise after weight loss, essentially pushing you to regain. Then there’s muscle loss: studies suggest some of the weight lost on GLP-1 drugs can be lean muscle, and less muscle means a lower resting metabolic rate, which makes maintaining weight harder.
GLP-1 medications can be powerful tools, but they work best as part of a bigger plan. Studies like these highlight general patterns, not predictions for every individual, and weight regain is something that can happen after almost any kind of weight loss, not just with GLP-1s. Still, long-term success is more likely when these medications are combined with sustainable changes in eating, regular movement, and strength training.
