Innovative approaches to mental health are changing lives in central Africa with StrongMinds, a community-based initiative led primarily by women. Departing from traditional mental health care, StrongMinds empowers local non-professional volunteers to lead group therapy sessions. This interpersonal approach identifies triggers like life changes or social conflicts that contribute to depression and trauma. Participants share experiences and brainstorm coping strategies during six weeks of sessions.
Volunteers, often former participants, receive training to facilitate sessions and treatment. This model helps dismantle the stigma around mental health. It shows individuals how to open up and share with their peers who often have had similar experiences. Since its inception in 2013, StrongMinds has treated more than half a million individuals. With programs expanding across Africa and a pilot in the United States, StrongMinds is revolutionizing mental health care, one community at a time.
