Hundreds of Romanian taxi drivers staged a protest in Bucharest this week, voicing their concerns over what they perceive as unfair competition from ridesharing companies. More than a thousand vehicles congested constitution square, as drivers made a stand against what they believe are lenient regulations towards alternative transport services.
Protesters demand the government implement stricter controls on ridesharing apps, mirroring regulations that taxis must adhere to. Among their demands are limitations on alternative transport services, a halt on permits for rental cars, and extended vehicle age limits. Taxi drivers argue these measures are crucial to prevent the collapse of their industry and ensure fair competition. Participants, some of which spent the night in their vehicles, are prepared to escalate their protest to a hunger strike if their needs are not met.
