In the U.S., an organization called American Prairie is revolutionizing conservation efforts by encouraging partnership between public entities and private landowners. This innovative strategy aims to restore vital migratory routes for bison and antelope by connecting private ranches to create safe pathways for wildlife. Ranchers in the program receive lower grazing fees in exchange for small, wildlife-friendly adaptations to their land.
By replacing barbed wire fencing with soft wire, or creating openings at known migratory hot spots, ranchers are experiencing fewer conflicts between people and wildlife. This new way of creating access for these migratory species to reclaim their traditional grazing routes eliminates the need for larger reserves. This project highlights the valuable role community collaboration plays in the preservation and support of local wildlife.
