A recent study from a U.K. university highlights the significant role tree bark plays in regulating weather and the environment. Researchers discovered that microbes residing in tree bark effectively absorb methane. This groundbreaking research examined tropical, temperate, and boreal forests across various countries, including the Amazon. Tropical forests, in particular, showed the highest methane absorption, benefiting from warm and wet conditions favorable for microbes.
Interestingly, methane absorption increases at heights above six feet, indicating taller trees may consume more methane. Tree bark could be absorbing millions of tons of methane each year, highlighting its vital role in stabilizing atmospheric methane levels. Protecting our forests is essential for the planet’s health, emphasizing the importance of tree bark in our ecosystem.
