Scientists at the University of Birmingham have created a ground-breaking therapy specializing in helping people with spinal cord injuries to heal their nerves. A device that shines red and near-infrared light at the exact point of damage is implanted during spinal surgery. This new technique helps to repair the spinal tissue directly and has never been done before in humans. Just five days of red light treatment for one minute a day boosted cell regeneration by 45-percent in animals.
This therapy also significantly reduces scarring and cavity formation, while boosting the proteins needed for nerve repair and regeneration. The researchers are now moving towards human clinical trials, bringing them one step closer to transforming spinal cord injury recovery. This promising approach brings hope for better healing and improved quality of life for spinal injury patients in the future.
