Local authorities say one potential solution is the establishment of a crown corporation, which they say would protect private electricity providers and possibly encourage new power generation projects.
This corporation could facilitate new gas fired plants, negotiate for small-scale nuclear reactors, or purchase existing gas fired plants. Authorities suggest a collaboration on a 2050 emissions target instead. Critics argue that Alberta’s stance, backed by the sovereignty within a United Canada Act, could undermine investment certainty, respect for the law, treaty rights, and efforts to address climate change. Legal experts also question the timing and necessity of the resolution, as the regulations are not yet in effect.
