Thanks to an innovative new prosthetic designed for water use, amputees can now fully enjoy the beach or pool, and swimming activities. Researchers at Northwell Health have developed “The FIN,” a prosthetic that works both in and out of water, eliminating the need for multiple devices. Made from 3D-printed carbon fiber-enhanced nylon, it features holes that let water pass through smoothly.
In testing, ten amputees successfully used The FIN on their first try, noting it significantly reduced their time exiting the pool. Compared to typical swim prosthetics, The FIN is light and easy to use. It can be worn all day, allowing seamless movement from boardwalks to beaches and pools, enhancing outdoor activities with family and friends. This prosthetic ensures pure, stress-free enjoyment of water activities.
