In the heart of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a mobile library called Kitabus is transforming education. Kitabus combines the Swahili words for “book” and “bus” to bring reading to students with limited access to libraries. With fewer than five public libraries in the city, this initiative is a game-changer, offering a rich collection of novels, fables, magazines, and textbooks.
Students can read on the bus or in special outdoor setups at their schools. Kitabus visits for two hours of uninterrupted reading, turning schoolyards into vibrant literary havens. This pioneering project sets a new standard for educational outreach, ensuring the joy of reading is accessible to all. As the first initiative of its kind in the region, Kitabus is becoming more than just a library on wheels – it’s a vehicle for change and educational growth opportunities.
