A local farmer in Ireland has turned his 27 acres farm into a forest haven, transforming his once tree barren land into a temperate rainforest using a technique, he calls rewilding. This rewilding approach focuses on inhibiting certain invasive elements so that the land’s heritage features can take hold and grow. The farmer began by focusing his efforts on erecting fences to deter goats and non-native deer from eating vital undergrowth. Next, he began slowly eliminating invasive plant species that were restricting natural forest growth.
In just 14 years, this experiment in environmental restoration has begun to yield impressive results, including the return of native trees, wildflowers, fauna and wildlife to the area. This initiative showcases the vast potential of rewilding as a solution to restoring native ecosystems without the need for new tree planting to reach ecological goals. Rewilding is a great example of how we, as humans, can work with nature to help restore our world.
