Young people in Somaliland, Southern Africa, are transforming their city’s public spaces using the popular video game Minecraft. In Minecraft, users create structures with virtual blocks, and it has become a powerful tool for city design. As part of a project introduced in 2019, youth have been empowered to take active roles in urban planning. 47 young residents identified key city issues, and a group of 15 went on to design the Hargeisa Stadium Park using Minecraft.
The game’s accessibility means that even those with minimal formal education can easily learn and participate. Their imaginative plans include playgrounds, sports facilities, basic services, and safe areas for women and girls. Despite some delays, the park is now being built, incorporating their innovative ideas. This project shows how involving youth in city planning ensures future development meets the needs of all residents while empowering the next generation.
