In India, an I-T specialist named Tharun Kumar created an eco-friendly sewage treatment system inspired by a cow’s stomach. Cow stomachs break down food using anaerobic bacteria, which don’t need oxygen. Typical wastewater systems use aerobic bacteria and require ventilation, electric power, manpower and, sometimes, chemicals.
Kumar’s invention is zero-energy and zero-chemical, with wastewater traveling through four chambers using bacteria and natural filters. These filters help remove solids and absorb nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. Health inspectors deemed the treated water suitable for toilets and gardening. So far, the system has cleansed 2 billion liters of sewage without using power or chemicals.
