In Gambia a high court is hearing a lawsuit regarding the tragic deaths of at least 70 children aged five and younger due to cough syrup poisoning

The children lost their lives after consuming a cough syrup containing dangerously high toxin levels, manufactured by the Indian company, Maiden Pharmaceuticals.

19 families have brought forward the lawsuit, calling for acknowledgement of their children’s deaths due to the contaminated syrup. The families are also demanding that Gambia’s medical controls agency admit to their failure in ensuring the safety of the medication.

They are seeking compensation of around 230 thousand dollars for each child lost. The lawsuit targets not only Maiden Pharmaceuticals but also Atlantic pharmaceuticals, the importer of the drugs, as well as various state bodies in Gambia. The case has resulted in the recall of multiple medications and the suspension of Maiden Pharmaceuticals’ license by the Indian government.
