In Bangladesh, the widespread use of the herbicide glyphosate is raising health and environmental concerns. Glyphosate, known by its brand name roundup, and used to control weeds in tea gardens, is banned in 33 countries. Health concerns arise as the herbicide, linked to several health issues, can persist in the environment, affecting not only the soil and water systems but also local biodiversity.
Studies have noted a decline in pollinator populations due to such chemicals. Authorities acknowledge the risks but cite the lack of cost-effective alternatives as a reason for continued use. Meanwhile, the government’s initiative to train workers on the proper use of herbicides is challenged by a shortage of manpower and specialists to oversee the process.
