In India, a thoughtful youth group known as the “good fellows” is making a difference in the lives of elderly citizens by connecting them with young volunteers. Many elderly have reported feeling isolated, with their doorbell hardly ringing. This initiative aims to tackle loneliness among seniors, especially those who are alone due to the absence of a spouse or close family members. This compassionate movement was founded by three young individuals, who had a shared affection for spending time with their grandparents. Presently, they have a team of 65 young adults between 18 and 24, and 400 elderly participants registered. Elders are registered as a “Grandpal,” seeking a “good fellow.”
The selection process includes an interview to understand the cognitive abilities and interests of the senior, to be sure of a compatible pairing. The experiences shared by two young volunteers reveal the fulfilling nature of this service. One volunteer recounted a time when he spent three hours assisting his Grandpal to find the perfect pair of shoes. Another Grandpal found joy in writing her memoirs, assisted by her Tec savvy good fellow. The pairings often last until the Grandpal’s final days, and during this time, good fellows are encouraged to take leave to mourn and care for their mental wellbeing. The seniors are filled with hope and anticipation as they look forward to visits with their good fellows. The loving relationships enrich the lives of both parties. The Grandpals receive companionship and fun. The good fellows gain wisdom from the lifetime experiences of their elderly friends.
