In an effort to provide a fresh start for people in need, Charlie Burrell a passionate advocate for the homeless in the rural community of Little River, New Brunswick, Canada has built 21 bunkhouses. The aim is to provide a refuge for individuals looking to escape from the streets and make a change in their lives. The project is an extension of Burrell’s outreach work with the homeless and is designed to create a safe space from the crime and drug problems of nearby urban areas.
Driven by his experiences with the harsh reality of helping the homeless, he yearned for a better solution than providing temporary aid. Charlie Burrell believes the tiny Bunkhouse community will offer a more permanent solution to homelessness and addiction issues. Choosing who gets a place in the community is a tough decision, but priority is given to those at higher risk of overdose and those unlikely to survive the winter without shelter.
The project also provides onsite addiction and mental health services. Each Bunkhouse is fully equipped with electricity, heating, and air conditioning. This community is hoped to serve as a haven where people can begin to overcome their addictions and other challenges. The next phase of the project is an apartment style dwelling and larger homes. The goal of the initiatives to bring lasting and positive change to the people it houses, their families, and the greater community.
