Legislation has been proposed in Europe to phase out disposable plastics and make society accountable for the millions of plastic bags ending up in landfills and oceans every year. The new proposals cover industry, manufacturing, retail and people’s homes, and are designed to ensure all packaging on the entire market is recyclable. Restrictions will be put on single use packaging for fruit and vegetables, condiments, sauces, and beverages served in food service, as well as cosmetics and toiletries used in hotels and holiday accommodation.
Scientific evidence suggests that plastic bags could take up to 1thousand years to degrade, and the microplastics produced could continue to harm the environment for even longer. Harmful chemicals from these plastics in the sea are known to stunt the growth of vital marine microorganisms and pose a significant threat to both human health and wildlife. The proposed legislation also encourages waste prevention and urges individuals to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle by carrying reusable bags when shopping and keeping them clean to prolong their useful life.
