Progress is being made in Egypt as a result of their national reforestation program. New forests are being established and irrigated with wastewater from nearby urban centers. Under this initiative, a total of 2 thousand five hundred square miles are being planted at different locations throughout the country, which is 96 percent desert. The treated wastewater provides the heat-tolerant trees with a natural source of fertilizer.
The nutrients found in the water effectively supercharge the forest making it grow quickly and efficiently. Research shows that deserts are expanding, and trees can help slow down this process. trees can stop erosion of the soil, provide shade, and make a good habitat for animals and other plants. Egyptian residents have been pleased to see their deserts turning green with life.
