A Canadian company, called Flash Forest, intends to plant one Billion trees by 2028, using aerial drones. Two brothers started the company after seeing their hometown of Kelowna, British Columbia, experience a devastating fire. The aerial drones shoot seed pods at high velocity into the ground to embed the seeds deep in the soil.
These drones can rapidly plant about five pods per second, and cover a lot of ground in minutes. They are planting varieties of pine, spruce, and fir in fire-damaged areas all over Canada to ensure richly biodiverse landscapes. In their first year in the spring of 2021, the team planted more than 300thousand seed pods. Their ambitions remain high. it appears now that aerial tree planting is quickly becoming a viable method for reforestation.
