A study from Brazil suggests used coffee grounds can help reduce groundwater contamination by absorbing Bentazone, a herbicide commonly used in agriculture. Researchers found treating coffee grounds with zinc chloride made their carbon content 70 percent more effective at removing herbicides from polluted groundwater. Tests showed damage to plant root tissues was reduced after treating contaminated water with these processed coffee grounds. The treatment effectively neutralized the herbicides.
Any plant’s development is disrupted when its root tissue is damaged, so this points to an important potential benefit for plant health in areas contaminated by agricultural chemicals. If successful on a larger scale, this method could reduce the damage to animals, plants, and humans caused by accumulated herbicides in groundwater. Additionally, it offers an efficient way to recycle coffee waste instead of discarding it.
