In Brazil, a country facing a serious hunger crisis, efforts are intensifying to combat food insecurity through the reduction of food waste. Approximately 5percent of Brazil’s population faces undernourishment, while around a third experience moderate to severe food insecurity. This crisis has worsened due to economic downturns and the COVID19 pandemic, despite Brazil being one of the world’s largest food producers.
Surprisingly, about 42 percent of all food produced in Brazil does not reach those in need, largely due to losses in production, transportation, and consumer waste. Nonprofit organizations focus on redistributing surplus food from supermarkets and farms to those in dire need, including children in nurseries and the homeless. Education on using imperfect food items is also a priority, challenging consumer expectations for flawless produce.
