In Australia, a groundbreaking technique is developing a remarkable type of ceramic that has received wide acclaim and several awards. This innovative project recycles old clothing and combines it with waste glass to create ‘green ceramics’ a line of designer tiles that are both ecofriendly and aesthetically pleasing. Recognizing the need for sustainable practices, the building and construction industry, which is responsible for 60percent of the country’s waste, sees great potential in these materials.
These sustainable materials are not only being considered for tiles but are also being explored for use in furniture and as integral structural components such as walls and foundations. The concept of local Micro factories is taking root, allowing for the production of these high-quality materials from locally sourced waste. This vision of reducing waste has been actualized with the opening of the first commercially operated micro factory in a rural Australian community representing a vital step towards achieving a zero-waste economy.
